Rick and Morty: S1E5 “Meeseeks and Destroy”

9.1 Overall Score
Creativity: 10/10
Storylines: 9/10
Humor: 9/10

(Great story | Funny | Re-watchable)

(One of the story lines was weak)

Rick and Morty is a cross between Dr. WhoBack to the Future,  The Magic School Bus on acid, and Adventure Time but a little more rapey.

The brainchild of Dan Harmon (creator and executive producer of Community) and Justin Roiland (voice actor), Rick and Morty shows promise to be another Adult Swim staple. Because this show is in fact created by Dan Harmon, it explains why this is basically Abed’s wet dream.

[Spoilers Below]

The premise of this episode involves Rick giving the family a box, that when pressed, unleashes a magical being called a Meeseek that will accomplish any task you desire and then explodes. The family is plagued with minor tasks such as opening a mayonnaise jar,  being popular at school, taking two strokes off your golf game, but what happens if a Meeseek can’t accomplish a task?

Which begs the question, what would you ask a Meeseek to do for you?Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 2.45.53 PM

Meanwhile, Rick allows Morty to choose what adventure they will go on since Morty has been scared at every adventure that Rick has planned so far. Morty ends up choosing some far off land where Giants exist in the clouds like Jack and the Beanstalk, only there’s more than one giant, and Rick and Morty kind of kill one, so they end up in Giant court.. [Insert giant soap being dropped in the shower joke here]. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 2.58.15 PM

At the same moment but in the regular universe, Morty’s dad is having a difficult time taking instructions from his Meeseek. In frustration, his original Meeseek has summoned many more Meeseeks to now help him with the problem of trying to take two strokes off his game. Meeseeks are used to only being alive for a few hours, so a few days of still not accomplishing their task seems like an eternity to them.

Rick and Morty avoid jail because a giant lawyer who protects the rights of little people points out that they were not read their giant rights when they were arrested. Avoiding jail, they decide to stop off at a local bar in this parallel universe where a bunch of crazy tiny beings also live. Most seem friendly but when Morty decides to take a quick bathroom break, a giant jelly bean tries to rape him… Yeah this show does stuff like that so get used to it. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 3.08.11 PM

The Meeseeks are going crazy and decide the only way they can finally accomplish their task and die is to kill Morty’s dad. Yeah that makes sense! So they attack the restaurant he’s eating dinner in and corner him into a meat locker. The Meeseeks take some hostages for good measure, and threaten to kill them unless he comes out and dies. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 3.12.04 PM

Will Morty escape the sticky grasp of a giant horny jelly bean? Will Morty’s dad come out and sacrifice himself to the Meeseeks in order to protect innocent lives?! I will leave that for you all to watch and see how it plays out.
