Absence of Andrea | Return of Rick

Dale's goddamn face | Lack of Zombies

The Walking Dead is back after an exciting mid-season finale at the end of November. This episode picks up right where the previous episode left off; with Shane leading the slaughter of Hershel’s barn-o-walkers, which happened to included the missing Sophia.

Shocking huh? Yeah. One would have thought the focus of the episode would have been that the girl they have been looking all season for was IN THE BARN THE ENTIRE TIME! But no, that isn’t how The Walking Dead does things. Instead, they brush off what could be an interesting plot point and decide to do other things.

I’ll give you a quick run down of the first half of the episode:

  • Glenn and Maggie like each other and they talk about it.
  • Shane yells at Dale for being a wuss; Dale looks surprised.
  • Lori doesn’t want Rick to go save Hershel. Rick goes to save Hershel.
  • Carol is sad and frustrated. Takes out her rage on some bushes.
  • Dale reveals to Lori that he thinks Shane killed Otis. Lori is surprised.
  • T-Dawg does nothing.

Enthralling huh?

Anyway, the episode really only picks up near the end when Glenn, Rick and Hershel run into some strangers in town. Seeking refuge, two men ask Rick if they can join up with them at the farm. Rick flatly refuses, while Hershel tries to keep from coughing “hypocrite” too loudly. The men pull guns on the gang and Rick quickly kills them both.

I’m not quite sure how to feel about that whole scene. I can understand how Rick was acting to protect the group, but it came off as him gunning down two guys (supposedly) looking for help. It was odd to me because Rick was essentially in the same position not too long ago when he was asking Hershel for help. Regardless, it reminded us that Rick is still the badass we grew to love in season 1. It was a definite boost for his character who had been following the path of sad, whiny leaders (see: Jack Shepard of LOST) for too many episodes. Glad to see him return to form a bit.

Unfortunately the gang didn’t make it off the farm in this episode. I think the safety of the farm is getting old real fast. There is no sense of danger that was present throughout the entire first season. It was a good break for a few episodes but damn, I want to watch The Walking Dead not General Hospital. Hopefully something goes down and the gang is forced to make a move sooner than later.

Oh, and Lori crashed a car and may or may not be dead, but who really cares.
